The Garret is a literary podcast ‘by writers, for writers, about writers’. Each episode (released about every week, seasonally) features a 40-odd minute conversation between host Nic Brasch and a successful writer (season one guests were Victorian, season two guests were from around Australia while an upcoming third season will feature writers from around the world).
Nic (himself an author) is charmingly well-read, with a curious and insightful interviewing style; he steers guests away from the well-trodden path of book promotion and leads them instead on rambling, surprising and often funny journeys through their life stories and writing careers. Producer Astrid Edwards (of Bad Producer Productions) deserves equal kudos – this podcast sounds great, and is skilfully edited with subtle music breaks between conversational shifts.
The Garret is a partnership between the State Library of Victoria, Swinburne University, Writers Victoria and Readings – all stalwarts of Melbourne’s literary scene – so it’s no surprise The Garret is an entertaining and accessible resource for writers and literature fans.
